How the thirty minutes are spent.
First 10 minutes
You talk. What prompted the call: the customer that is asking, the audit that is coming, the incident that happened, or the board question you could not answer in the room.
Next 15 minutes
I talk. What I would look at first, what usually turns out to be the real problem in a situation like yours, and what I have seen work in fifteen years of doing this.
Last 5 minutes
We decide. Whether this is worth taking further. If the retainer is the wrong shape for you I will say so and tell you what would fit better.
Bring nothing in particular.
Preparation is not required. If you happen to have them, three things make the call sharper: the questionnaire or audit finding that started this, who currently carries security and what else is on their desk, and the one risk you would least like to explain to your board.
Nothing you tell me on the call leaves it, whether or not we go on to work together.
